BØRGE MOGENSEN (1914 – 1972)
[beue mo-ven’sn] put an emphasis on functionality above appearance at the first place. He became familiar with principle of functionalism during the study of Furniture Design at the Danish School of Arts and Crafts.In order to design ingenious furniture, Mogensen run several studies on contemporary lifestyles to identify ideally customised objects of daily use. Same studies also inspired him to design a house with embodied shelving and storage places instead of placing these into the space.
Mogensen won critics over with leather tie upholstery armchair called the ‘Spanish Chair’ (1949). Critics claimed chair to be a pattern for seats design in future. The tie upholstery concept can be identified in many of other Mogensen’s designs.
Mogensen’s simple, sophisticated design goes beyond the Modernism and remains attractive even today.
